Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York on October 27, 1858, and was educated privately and at Harvard University. At the age of 23 he became a member of the New York State Legislature (parliament). From 1889 to 1895 he was the Civil Service Commissioner at Washington, and from 1895 to 1897, he was the New York City Police Commissioner. He was elected governor of New York in 1898.

In 1901 he became Vice President of The United States Of America. When President McKinley was shot by an assassin on September 6, 1901 and died on September 14, Theodore Roosevelt became the President. He was re-elected for a second term in 1904 with a large majority.

In 1906 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his part in negotiations which ended the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. In 1912 he was once again a candidate for the Presidency, but was defeated. He died at Oyster Bay, New York, on January 6, 1919.
